The Crocodingo was a bizarre canine-like creature rumored to have been sighted multiple times during the American Civil War. The most famous sighting occurred on July 31, 1839, when farmer Hank Lemon noticed a green glow behind his house one night, which caused his dogs to become agitated. It was then that a streak of light described as a “dead straight bolt of lightning” crashed down into the woods beyond his property, after which the glow in the sky abruptly vanished. Lemon stood there surveying the silent dark woods for awhile before suddenly a strange creature allegedly bolted forth from the underbrush. (mysteriousuniverse.org)
One witness described the creature as looking decidedly “alien,” with the body of a “mangy wolf” and a misshapen head that resembled that of a crocodile. The bizarre monster was described as having the body of a large dog topped with a bulbous reptilian alligator-like head, complete with jagged fangs. (mysteriousuniverse.org)
There are several explanations as to what the creature could be. Theories include:
- An undiscovered species (a Cryptid)
- A deformed coyote
- This Legend could also possible be classified as an Alien Sighting due to the green glow and bolt of lightning, but there is nothing that specifically links the Crocodingo to extraterrestrial activity.
- It reportedly moved very quickly, and was said to exude an unbearably horrid stench that was described as "something that would drive a man crazy should he be exposed to it for too long a period."
