Stiffy Green is an alleged phantom dog rumored to haunt the Heinhl mausoleum at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, Indiana. Nowadays, the bodies of John Heinhl and Stiffy Green are located in a replica mausoleum "reconstructed as part of the "Haunted Legends" display in the Historical Museum of the Wabash Valley, located at 1411 S. Sixth St. in Terre Haute." (Weird US)
Manifestations[]
- Barking and whining noises
- A phantom man walking with his dog
Background[]
Stiffy Green the bulldog was the loyal pet of a man named John Heinhl. When Heinhl died in the 1920s, Stiffy sat crying right next to the casket for the duration of the funeral. Anyone who tried to comfort the dog was met with barking and biting. When the funeral ended and the body was placed in the mausoleum, Stiffy refused to move from in front of the tomb's door. Rumors circulated that Stiffy would even sit there during hurricanes.
Eventually, Stiffy Green died as well. Mrs. Heinhl supposedly had the dog stuffed and placed inside the mausoleum, right next to her husband. One night, late-night visitors to the mausoleum fired bullets into the crypt, shattering one of the Stiffy's green eyes. Because of this, the Heinhl family decided to remove the dog from the crypt. However, the local Lion's Club convinced the family to donate the dog to the Vigo County Historical Society.
