Flying Rays are a strange variety of atmospheric creature described as resembling giant flying manta rays.
On December 3, 2004, in Mason County, a flying “manta ray” was witnessed. On a clear night, after two people, a man and a woman departed Point Pleasant en route to Huntington, West Virginia. On their journey, the woman noticed a sudden movement in the sky over the Ohio River. The shape swooped in a figure 8 in front of the windshield and then was suddenly gone.
Appearance[]
These objects/creatures have been described as resembling enormous, flying manta rays the size of an average car or larger. They are often described as being gray or black in color, as well as being translucent.
Possible Explanations[]
There are several explanations as to what the creature could be. Theories include:
- An undiscovered species (a Cryptid)
- A UFO
Trivia[]
- Another sighting was reported in Randolph County near Black Fork and Blackwater River. A woman and her daughter saw a manta shaped creature that glided along over or near their car.
- Known ray species (such as the Manta and the Mobula) can lift themselves at least 9 feet out of the water and glide. Since both sighting occurred near rivers, it is plausible that this creature is an undiscovered river ray.
