· Dead raccoon
The Montauk Monster was the name given to a strange animal carcass that washed ashore on the northern coast of Long Island in the summer of 2008. As of now, the carcass is generally assumed to have been a dead raccoon.
It appears to be a creature the size of a dog with little to no hair and grayish brown skin. It has a beak-like mouth with several canine-like teeth and very short ears. It possesses clawed paws and a long thin tail.
There are several explanations as to what the creature could be. Theories include:
- An undiscovered species (a Cryptid)
- A genetic experiment from the nearby Plum Island Animal Disease Center
- A hoax (possibly a manufactured corpse)
- A dead dog
- A dead raccoon
- The accepted explanation for the creature is that it is a dead raccoon with missing teeth, due to the similar body and skull shape.
