The Awful was a winged cryptid reportedly sighted in the towns of Richford and Berkshire, Vermont, by several people. The first sighting involved two sawmill workers who were crossing a bridge when they saw the beast glaring menacingly down at them from a rooftop. One of the men was so frightened that he immediately had a heart attack.
Appearance[]
The Awful was often described as being similar in appearance to a Griffin with grayish-wings and a 20-foot wingspan. It had a very long, serpentine tail and enormous claws.

There are several explanations as to what the creature could be. Theories include:
- An undiscovered species (a Cryptid)

Trivia[]
- The creature is said to be the inspiration for several stories written by famed science-fiction author H. P. Lovecraft. In 1925, Lovecraft actually ventured to the towns of Richford and Berkshire, Vermont, to investigate sightings of the creature.
