The Black Angel is a foreboding bronze statue located in Oakland Cemetery, on the northern side of Iowa City, Iowa. Every year, hundreds flock to the statue to experience its phenomena for themselves.
The statue is an eight foot tall bronze statue that, over time, has changed from a bronze luster to a ghostly black. All attempts to restore its original color have failed.
Legends say that if a virgin girl receives a kiss in front of the angel, the original color will be restored. However, another legend says that any girl kissed in front of the monument will die within six months. One story says that any man who kisses the angel herself will die instantly. Even touching the angel or making eye contact with her will bring the offender down with an unknown disease.
There are several explanations as to what the phenomenon could be. Theories include:
- A demonic presence
- A ghost
- One legend states that Teresa Feldevert, the matriarch of the family buried beneath the statue, was an evil witch.
- One story tells of a group of drunk men who once urinated on the statue and later died of a car accident on their way home from the cemetery.
